The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest report on foreign-owned farmland in the United States shows that in 2021, 40 million acres (3.1%) of all privately held ag land was owned by foreign investors, according to an analysis of the report from the American Farm Bureau Federation.
Danny Munch, AFBF economist, said Canadian investors own the largest portion of foreign-held U.S. farmland, followed by the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany. Those five countries make up over half of all U.S. ag land owned by foreign investors.
