Throughout 2019, The Hoosier Farmer will be observing Indiana Farm Bureau’s 100th anniversary in a number of ways. One of the ways will be using old newspaper clippings and historic photos to give us a glimpse into the organization’s past. Shown here is a 1939 farmer rally against the repeal of the gross income tax. Retailers said their taxes were too high and had pushed to get the tax repealed, so on Feb. 23 of that year, 15,000 Farm Bureau members marched to the Statehouse to demonstrate their support for the gross income tax. In the end, the tax was amended but not repealed.
