Indiana Collegiate Farm Bureau chapters still planning for fall 2020

Aug 3, 2020, 14:21 PM by Shelby Shank, INFB Marketing Team Intern

Indiana Farm Bureau provides unique opportunities for young professionals to get involved in agriculture. One of those opportunities is being a part of a Collegiate Farm Bureau.

There are currently four collegiate chapters in Indiana: Purdue, Vincennes and Huntington universities and a newly established chapter at Ancilla College.

Collegiate Farm Bureau offers students the opportunity to grow in their leadership and career development, engage in their communities and network with other young professionals who share the same passion to advocate for agriculture.

As stated in the Indiana Collegiate Farm Bureau vision statement, the goal of the program is “for students to become well informed and articulate leaders in the Indiana agriculture industry.” Each chapter has a unique way of preparing its students to become advocates for the industry through the various events it hosts and participates in on campus.

Getting involved on campus is one of the most important things college students can do to get the most out of their experience. Through involvement in a Collegiate Farm Bureau, students participate in events such as Ag Week Pancake Breakfast at Purdue University or Ag Olympics at Vincennes University with FFA. At Huntington University, they have their traditional petting zoo event and harvest festival with a barn dance.

By being a part of Collegiate Farm Bureau, college students also have the opportunity to engage with the county, state and national Farm Bureau. All of the Indiana Collegiate Farm Bureau chapters can attend the national Young Farmers & Ranchers Conference, the Indiana Young Farmers & Ag Professionals Conference and state convention. They might also have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., for INFB’s annual three-day trip to experience the USDA’s crop report lockup, or to participate in the Collegiate Discussion Meet.

Once students are back on campus this fall, they will attend regular meetings with guest speakers as well as plan for upcoming events. Purdue hopes to have a fall Welcome Bash at Exploration Farms, and Huntington is planning for a fall dance.
