Indiana Farm Bureau is gearing up for its 2020 policy development campaign. Policy development begins with county Farm Bureau members developing policy recommendations that address local, state and federal issues pertaining to or impacting Hoosier agriculture.

Policy recommendations developed at the county level, which are due June 15, are then submitted to the home office and reviewed by INFB’s policy advisory groups (PAGs). The PAGs will review these policy recommendations, consider some of their own and submit all recommendations to the resolutions committee by June 30. 

The 2020 PAGs have been refocused to address the current policy landscape and emerging issues impacting agriculture and rural Indiana. This year’s policy groups are as follows:

• Farm policy/farm bill and crops.
• Livestock and animal care.
• Transportation.
• Property rights.
• Government and fiscal policy.
• Education.
• Water resources.
• Food production systems and diversified ag.
• Rural development and rural quality of life.
• Local government issues and local control.
• New natural resources, sustainable ag, climate change and soil health.

If an INFB member has an interest in serving on any of the 2020 PAGs or would like to nominate another member, submit names directly to Katrina Hall, khall@infb.org.

Next on the policy development calendar is the meeting of the resolutions committee. This year, the resolutions committee will meet at the INFB headquarters July 29-30.

The resolutions committee, made up of members from across the state, will review the policy recommendations submitted by the counties, the districts, the PAGs, the State Young Farmers & Ag Professionals Committee and Collegiate Farm Bureaus. Committee members will determine which policy recommendations are to be considered by the full delegate body during the INFB delegate session on Aug. 29.
