Agronomist says to check for harvest losses
An
agronomist is urging farmers to take a few extra minutes to minimize harvest
losses.
William Wynn with Pioneer tells Brownfield farmers should harvest a little, and then shut everything down and get out of the cab for inspection. “If you find four individual soybeans in a square foot, that’s about a bushel on the ground so take ten minutes, shut down the harvester after you go about 500 feet, walk behind the head, walk behind the machine and evaluate what you have on the ground.”
Wynn says a fast way to measure is to drop a ball cap, which is roughly half of a square foot, and if more than four beans are found in a square foot, the harvest losses are around a bushel an acre and it’s time to make some adjustments.
