The USDA projects 2019 alfalfa and alfalfa mix production at 55.393 million tons, compared to 52.634 million in 2018. The average yield is seen at 3.29 tons per acreage this year, compared to 3.17 last year, with a modest increase in harvested area, from 16.608 million acres in 2018 to 16.828 million in 2019. The USDA’s Farm Service Agency has 2019 planted area for just alfalfa at 9,783,972 million acres, including 46,530 failed acres and 3,798 prevented plant acres.
