Direct cash cattle trade activity is off to a slow start again today. A few asking prices have been noted at $113+ live in the South and $185+ dressed in the North. Just one bid has surfaced – that’s at $109 live in Kansas. It’s more than likely significant trade volume will be delayed until the latter half of the week – we could see at least a little business develop today.
Boxed beef is steady to firm at midday on moderate demand
for moderate to heavy offerings. Choice
is $.65 higher at $216.42 and Select is $.15 higher at $192.80. The Choice/Select spread is $23.63.
At the Kingsville Livestock Auction in Missouri, receipts
were up on the week. Compared to last
week, steers and heifers were steady to $5 higher and 550 to 600-pound heifers
were selling up to $7 higher. The USDA
says demand was good for several groups of home-raised grass cattle. Feeder supply included 43 percent steers and
62 percent of the offering was over 600 pounds.
Medium and Large 1 feeder steers 662 to 696 pounds brought $152 to
$159.50 and feeder steers 767 to 781 pounds brought $140.25 to $152.50. Medium and Large 1 feeder heifers 620 to 634
pounds brought $142.25 to $151 and feeder heifers 769 pounds brought $133.60.
Cash hogs opened lower with moderate negotiated purchase numbers.
