Gene editing research is
moving forward for crops, but animal agriculture is still facing strict
regulations in the US.
Alison Van Eenennam with UC Davis says with gene editing, livestock could be bred with resistance to diseases like PRRS in hogs.
“Researchers at the University of Missouri were able to basically turn off a protein that renders pigs susceptible to that virus. Actually, a company called Genus is taking that through the regulatory process to try and get it approved.”
But she tells Brownfield that will be a long process because unlike plants, gene-edited animals are regulated by the FDA as a new animal drug.
