Face-to-face trade talks between the U.S. and China resume this week. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will be in Shanghai for negotiations with the Chinese Vice Premier Liu He Tuesday and Wednesday.
Neither
side appears optimistic about ending the year-long trade war. President
Trump told reporters Friday he believes China would prefer to wait to see if
he—Trump—is reelected in 2020.
China
announced last week they were ready to negotiate with American ag product
suppliers. Chinese state media claims millions of tons of tariff-exempt
American soybeans have been shipped, but exact amounts have not been reported.
