There are
new signs the U.S.-China trade war might not end anytime soon. Chinese
state media People’s Daily says Commerce Minister Zhong Shan has joined the
negotiation team. Zhong Shan told the communist party paper the U.S.
started the economic and trade dispute in violation of the principles of the
World Trade Organization, and China must stand firm in defending its interests.
U.S. Trade
Representative Robert Lighthizer told reporters more telephone discussions with
China are happening this week and he might travel to Beijing if the phone calls
are productive.
President
Trump says there’s a long way to go to reach a deal and he might still impose
tariffs on another 325-billion dollars’ worth of Chinese goods if negotiations
break down. Trump tweeted Monday China wants a deal as companies seek to
leave China. China’s 2nd quarter growth was the slowest in 27
years.
