Horse mouth with vesicular stomatitis (Colorado State University)
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture is alerting horse and cattle owners to the apparent northern spread of vesicular stomatitis, a highly contagious viral disease of animals.
Nebraska state veterinarian Dr. Dennis Hughes says two horses in Colorado recently tested positive for the disease, which is called VS for short.
“About two weeks ago, Texas found the first cases—then New Mexico—and then last week Colorado had the horses they discovered in their state,” Hughes says.
