University of Illinois Extension weed scientist Aaron Hager
says tillage might be the best answer to controlling weeds in fields that didn’t
get planted this year. “There’s a lot of marestail right now and giant ragweed,
and waterhemp and some of these plants are well over 3 feet talk – pushing on 4
feet,” he says. “The likelihood of
achieving any good level of weed control through herbicide applications at this
point – you’re going to be very fortunate if you do.”
He tells Brownfield the goal on all acres – and especially the prevented plant acres this year – is to make sure as little weed seed is returned back into the seedbed.
