Concerns arise for cold stress to planted corn and soybeans

An agronomist based in northwest Illinois says cooler temperatures forecast in the upper Midwest could cause cold stress to seeds that have been planted.
Todd Thumma is with Golden Harvest in Morrison, Illinois.
“When seeds take in moisture and that moisture is cold to start with, it can actually shock the plant into not performing correctly or germinating correctly which leads to erratic growth and erratic emergence.”
He tells Brownfield seeds planted by Easter are probably in the clear, but corn and soybeans planted since then are at a higher risk for cold stress.
