The 2017 Census of Agriculture, released yesterday, shows just over 86 thousand farms in Iowa, a three percent decline from the last census in 2012.
Greg Thessen with the Ag Statistics Service in Iowa says most of decrease came in the mid-sized farm categories, with one exception.
“The 180 to 499 (acre) category did show a small increase. That could be an adjustment from some smaller operations getting larger or possibly some larger ones getting smaller,” Thessen says.
