The 2017 USDA Ag Census shows the number of farms in
Minnesota is declining.
Minnesota Ag Commissioner Thom Petersen says National Ag Statistics Service officials called the decrease statistically significant.
“That’s concerning because that’s a lot of different families and dollars being pumped into the economy.”
In 2012 there were more than 74,000 farms in
Minnesota. Five years later, USDA says
that number shrunk to less than 69,000.
Petersen tells Brownfield there’s not a lot his department can do to stem the tide.
