Farmers need
to exercise caution when managing grain bins after a flood.
Charles Hurburgh with Iowa State University tells Brownfield the submerged grain is considered an adulterated food product by the FDA.
“River water contains who knows what in terms of industrial waste, sewage, all kinds of things and the grain that was actually covered by the flood can’t be resold or used. That’s tough to hear, I know, but from a food safety perspective that’s the way it is.”
He says the grain above the water is considered suspect and must be tested for mycotoxins.
