The USDA’s Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report indicates growth
in the swine herd isn’t finished.
As of March 1, the US herd was 74.3 million head, up 2
percent on the year, but down slightly from the previous quarter. Both the breeding herd and the market
inventory are up 2 percent on the year.
The December to February pig crop is up 3 percent from last
year. Sows farrowed during the period was
up 2 percent on the year with a record high average pigs saved per litter.
47 percent of the US hog inventory was contract hogs, that’s
unchanged from the previous year.
The numbers typically would be neutral to bearish to both
cash and futures prices, but with the ongoing spread of African Swine Fever in
China and the demand speculation the report may not be enough to slow the
markets recent hot streak.
