Nothing gets the attention of lawmakers faster than hundreds
of airplanes sitting on the ground at major airports – such as LaGuardia,
Atlanta, O’Hare – taking thousands of passengers nowhere. The stoppage isn’t weather-related, it’s
because the government’s been closed for over a month and air traffic
controllers, working without pay, won’t clear aircraft to fly or land “because
the system can’t handle it; it’s just not safe.”
