The USDA says September 2018 red meat production was down 5% on the year at 4.188 billion pounds.
Beef production was 3% lower at 2.158 billion pounds, with the slaughter at 2.618 million head, also down 3%, and the average live weight at 1,358 pounds, 1 pound lighter.
Pork was pegged at 2.013 billion pounds, a 7% drop, with a kill of 9.650 million head, down 6%, and an average live weight of 280 pounds, 2 lower than last year.
