An Iowa climatologist says La Nina could impact crop yields in 2018.
ISU Extension climatologist Elwynn Taylor says it’s impossible to say how long the current La Nina weather pattern will last. But he says the longer it hangs around, the greater the chance that it could impact yields across the Midwest.
“If the effect stays, we would have a 70 percent chance of a below trend yield,” Taylor says. “If it goes away before May has ended, then that chance of being below the trend diminishes.”
Taylor doesn’t expect a full-blown drought to develop, but he says it could be enough to create some excitement in the grain markets.
