Iowa State University weed scientists are sticking with their recommendations on dicamba use in 2018.
They say dicamba should only be used preplant or preemergence on dicamba tolerant soybeans—even though that greatly reduces dicamba’s value in managing waterhemp, the major weed problem facing most Iowa farmers.
ISU weed management specialist Bob Hartzler says the risks associated with postemergence applications exceed the weed management benefits.
“We recognize the need for that, but we do have options,” Hartzler says, “and because there are options, we just think the risk is too great.”
While it appears the majority of dicamba drift cases did not result in yield loss, Hartzler says any kind of drift damage is unacceptable.
