Organic groups have asked USDA ag secretary Sonny Perdue to reinstate the Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices rule.
Last month, the USDA announced that it intends to withdraw the proposed rule that would amend requirements and clarify animal welfare practices for production, handling, and transportation. The USDA says the rule exceeds its authority beyond the intent of the Organic Foods Production Act.
George Siemon, CEO of Organic Valley, says the organic system supports family farms and allows consumers to buy food that meets a higher standard for animal welfare.
