Farmers in a state where water quality has been a contentious issue are having their conservation efforts affirmed in an unconventional way.
Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton first proposed the Buffer Law in 2015, seeking mandatory 50-foot buffers around all public waters in the state. Following amendments in successive legislative sessions, a more flexible rule became enforceable this past November.
Minnesota Pork Producers Association president Jay Mohr says although agriculture was caught off guard by the Buffer Law, the fact that more than 90 percent of landowners were already compliant with the rule before it went into effect sends a strong statement.
