The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) says it is suing the USDA for withdrawing the Organics Livestock and Poultry Practices Rule.
The rule would have set stricter animal welfare standards for organic agriculture. USDA withdrew the rule in December, saying it exceeded its statutory authority and would have had a greater economic impact on farmers than originally estimated.
HSUS says the rule was “one of the most important rules to ever come out of a federal agency”.
