An official with the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service says current trade negotiating strategies for World Trade Organization members are not working and something must be done.
Jason Hafemeister, trade counsel to the Secretary of Agriculture, says new strategies that would allow a more market-oriented ag trading system are needed.
Hafemeister attended the 11th World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference (MC11) last month. He says it became clear at the meeting that some members are more interested in increasing trade barriers than eliminating them when members were unable to reach an agreement on any new plans.
