The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is equipping people who regularly interact with farmers to look for and respond to signs of stress and anxiety.
MDA senior advisor Meg Moynihan says the objective of the Down on the Farm training is to expand the support network available to farmers and farm families.
“The approach that we’re taking is to go out to agricultural advisors and other people that farmers interact with on a regular basis and help them be able to recognize the signs of mental and emotional stress and challenges, and be in a better position to talk about that and to connect farmers with sources of help if that’s appropriate.”
Given the struggling farm economy, she tells Brownfield many difficult conversations are taking place between farmers and their bankers, veterinarians, crop consultants, and others.
