Winter wheat is a tough crop to kill, but that toughness could be tested this weekend with below-zero temperatures forecast in the southern Plains states.
USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says it could be another strike against a crop already weakened by a lack of moisture last fall.
“This year we’ve got a crop that, in many areas of the southern Great Plains, is already stressed and poorly established,” Rippey says, “and given the fact that we’re seeing very little moisture in the soil, you can literally freeze-dry this crop.”
Rippey says winter kill is possible at five to ten below zero, which is a possibility in parts of the southern Plains this weekend.
