A former president of Iowa Farm Bureau has launched a campaign to be elected Iowa secretary of agriculture in 2018.
Craig Lang, a dairy farmer and cow-calf producer from Brooklyn, Iowa, says his top priority as ag secretary would be to improve the state’s soil health by increasing acres planted to cover crops.
“I have put a goal out there right away to reach five million acres of cover crops in Iowa within five years,” Lang says, “and that’s really a hefty goal because today we’re around 600-thousand acres.”
Lang says they’ve utilized cover crops on their farm for 15 years.
