The U.S. hog industry experienced major growth in 2017.
Minnesota Pork Producers Association CEO David Preisler says that momentum is expected to carry into the new year.
“It’s really strong, especially the increased slaughter capacity. We’ve had the plant in Windom, Minnesota open up back in April. A plant in Sioux City, Iowa open up in September, along with another plant in Coldwater, Michigan. That in itself has been really big as we look at maintaining our hog market because it’s creating more competition for those pigs that are out there.”
He tells Brownfield the other significant storyline this year has been excellent demand.
