A northwest Indiana farmer says young farmers and ranchers face a lot of barriers and they could discourage many from getting started or staying in the ag industry.
Deidra Gottbrath says high costs in farmland and low grain prices are two of those challenges.
“With inputs so high and the outcome so low right now we’ve seen quite a fluctuation in prices over the past couple of years,” she says. “People can make it one bad year or two bad years but when you have such a bad market for a couple of years it starts to really take a heavy hit on people.”
She tells Brownfield more emphasis needs to be placed on supporting young farmers.
