A disease on the upswing in hogs looks very much like Foot and Mouth Disease and the USDA is urging testing to rule that out.
USDA’s chief veterinarian, Dr. Jack Shere, tells Brownfield SenecaVirus-A has symptoms just like FMD, “They’re blisters that occur on what’s called the glabrous skin area, so around the feet. And the animals seem to go lame. They can recover from these blisters but Foot and Mouth disease looks exactly like that.”
Shere says there’s only ONE way to rule out the much more serious Foot and Mouth Disease, “We don’t want to take for granted and just assume and become complacent that this is SenecaVirus A and just allow the animals to move without testing them.”
Shere urges swine producers, veterinarians and animal health officials to be alert to the symptoms of Senecavirus A and take the time to have lab tests done.
