A Morning Consult study indicates three-fourths of farmers and farm workers say they’re directly impacted by opioid abuse. The poll, co-sponsored by the American Farm Bureau and National Farmers Union, is the first step in the groups’ collaboration on the issue.
American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duval says the numbers are heartbreaking, “There IS a stigma of people being ashamed to go see out help. We want to tell them that we understand that this is a sickness and we want them to find help to help their families through it.”
According to the survey, three out of four farmers say it’s easy for someone in their community to access opioids illegally, while just under half of all rural adults say the same.
