Understanding how cover crops impact yield continues to be a challenge.
Southeast Minnesota farmer Ed McNamara has been using cover crops since 2014 and says this year he took a yield hit on corn harvested late.
“Simply because when you have a cover crop growing, nutrients are taken up. And if you harvest that as feed or lay it back down on top, that still has to mineralize and release itself back into the ground.”
Growing conditions impact the mineralization of nutrients, and McNamara tells Brownfield weather extremes in 2017 slowed that process.
