An extension forage agronomist says alfalfa growers should focus on harvesting leaves, not tonnage.
Dr. Dan Undersander with the University of Wisconsin says tracking tonnage is important for fertilization and management, but the key to putting up quality alfalfa hay is the amount of leaves.
“Is it anywhere close to 50 percent leaves? If it is, they did a good job. If it’s down around 30 percent leaves and heavy stems, then they might think about where in their harvesting operation they could make some changes.”
He tells Brownfield farmers can reduce leaf loss by using fungicides on the crop if leaves are falling before mowing.
