EU approves five-year glyphosate license
The European Union has approved a five-year license renewal for glyphosate. Without the approval, announced Monday, authorization for glyphosate would have expired Dec. 15.
Germany backed the European Commission’s proposal, which allowed the renewal of the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup to be approved.
Although the Environmental Protection Agency reinforced that glyphosate does not cause cancer, there has been controversy surrounding the weed killer. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer released a report stating that it was “probably carcinogenic.”
Eighteen countries voted in favor of the five-year license and nine countries voted against it.
