A new bill signed into law by Michigan’s governor will prohibit local governments from taxing food manufacturing, distribution, or retail sale.
Michigan Farm Bureau Legislative Counsel Rebecca Park says Michigan House Bill 4999 will protect farmers and families from the negative impacts food taxes would have on the economy, and promote agriculture and the value-added processing the state offers.
“When you talk about that global competition, one small change in an area, particularly revolving around taxation, could have a big impact on the type of commodities that farmers are able to grow and be productive and profitable in,” she says.
