A new University of Wisconsin study says the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is contributing to climate change, a conclusion disputed by the Renewable Fuels Association.
The study, which was funded by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), says the conversion of habitat to cropland that took place following passage of the RFS in 2007 caused large amounts of carbon to be released into the atmosphere. It says those releases were equivalent to the annual emissions of six coal-burning power plants.
