An extension dairy specialist says a multiyear research project is helping to identify best management practices for Illinois dairy farmers.
Phil Cardoso with the University of Illinois tells Brownfield the dairy focus team was formed in 2014 to evaluate production practices and provide farmers research based results on how to improve efficiencies on their farms. “What are the problems that those farmers were facing in different areas? That could be nutrition, management, young stock, reproduction for example.”
Cardoso says on-farm visits and follow-up survey research has allowed the team to track year over year herd improvements and provide insight to other farmers.
