The World Trade Organization has ruled in favor of the US in its dispute with Indonesia over its import requirements for beef and beef products.
Thad Lively with the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) says this is an important win for the US. “Indonesia has in place a number of import restrictions that are pretty clearly inconsistent with what the rules of the WTO say,” he says. “A lot of this is driven by the fact that at times they have had a policy of becoming self-sufficient in beef.”
The USMEF says the ruling gives exporters and importers confidence that the market will remain open to US beef.
