Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue is believed to be the first cabinet-level official to publicly acknowledge the White House is developing a contingency plan should President Trump withdraw the U.S. from NAFTA.
“We’re talking with the Administration and with Congress about how we could protect our producers with that safety net based on prices that may respond very negatively to any kind of NAFTA withdrawal.”
Perdue told reporters Wednesday he’s disappointed NAFTA negotiations aren’t further along, but says he remains hopeful a modernized agreement is still in play.
