The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) wants Congress to renew its commitment to funding agricultural research. Chief veterinarian Dr. Liz Wagstrom told a House Research and Technology subcommittee that the U.S. is the lowest-cost, most technologically innovative and safest food producer in the world. She pointed out that research helped deal with diseases such as Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome and H1N1 flu. But, she says U.S. agriculture is vulnerable to emerging and foreign animal diseases, with particular concern about Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).
