Ag economists estimate Hurricane Harvey has caused more than 200-million-dollars in agricultural losses in the state of Texas.
Texas A&M livestock economist David Anderson says the livestock losses exceed 90-million-dollars.
He says while cattle and calves account for a portion of it – they weren’t the majority of the losses. “The bulk of the financial losses are really what we would often call the infrastructure losses,” he says. “Damaged fences that have to be repaired or rebuilt – for example.”
In addition, Anderson says extensive supplies of hay were lost just as ranchers are on the verge of entering winter feeding season.
