The Executive Director of the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association says the warm September weather that helped corn and soybeans slowed down their harvest. Tamas Houlihan tells Brownfield, “A lot of people don’t realize if it’s a beautiful, sunny, 80-degree day, you can’t harvest potatoes. It’s just too hot. And so, our growers had to shut down for another week or so at a time and wait until October. Now, fortunately, we’ve had great harvest weather.”
Houlihan tells Brownfield when the weather is too warm to harvest, it’s best to leave the potatoes in the ground.
