U.S. Meat Export Federation President Dan Halstrom says the organization aims to maximize carcass value by putting the right cut in the right market. In a conference call Tuesday, Halstrom cited demand growth for U.S. beef of more 21 percent in Chile, Peru and Colombia, where the federation markets specialty beef cuts that are of limited value in the U.S.
“The more demand you can create globally for these products, the more we can force the cutout higher,” said Halstrom, Tuesday, “which eventually translates into better prognosis for the live price.”
On the call, federation CEO Phil Seng said that threatening to leave the North American Free Trade Agreement is a mistake.
