A new test can detect Salmonella bacteria in 24 hours. Salmonella, a leading cause of food-borne illnesses, can infect livestock as well as people.

According to Cornell University, previous tests could take up to five days, but now detection for at least one type of Salmonella, Salmonella Dublin, will take one day. Salmonella Dublin in cattle can cause animals to become long-term carriers, putting other cattle and calves at risk.

The new method adapted by Cornell scientist can detect the bacteria from swabs, feces, milk, and blood.
