Farmers are improving water quality in the Western Lake Erie Basin according to a new report by the USDA.
The report indicates, conservation practices by farmers, like nutrient management and erosion control, has reduced sediment loss from fields by about 80 percent and reduced the amount of sediment going to Lake Erie by about 40 percent.
Leonard Jordan, acting chief of the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, says although there is still work to be done, the report shows farmers are responding to the need to put conservation plans into action across the basin.
