Poultry producers learned valuable lessons in the aftermath of the avian influenza outbreak, and USDA’s chief veterinarian says the learning continued following more cases of the virus earlier this year.
Dr. Jack Shere tells Brownfield enhanced biosecurity and improved disease monitoring have helped prevent a repeat of 2015.
“The majority of lessons and practices we’ve put in place did come out of the 14/15 outbreak. But we are also very aware from this outbreak (in 2017) that we have to be as vigilant about low path AI as we are about high path AI.”
Highly pathogenic avian flu wiped out millions of turkeys and egg-laying hens two years ago, while the less deadly low path AI—detected in the southeastern U.S.
