Contentious issues remain in talks on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement as the U.S., Canada and Mexico concluded a third round of talks in Ottawa, Canada this week.
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says some important issues related to small and medium-size enterprises were resolved.
“It’s very, very important that we’ve completed this chapter on small- and medium-sized enteprises,” Lighthizer said. “Additionally, significant progress continues to be made in numerous other areas, including competition policy, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, customs and telecommunications.”
Lighthizer says the negotiations are progressing “at an unprecedented pace”, but negotiators acknowledge much work remains if they are to wrap the process up by the end of the year, as planned.
