The family that owns South Dakota-based Beef Products Incorporated has set up a 10-Million-dollar fund to assist former employees of the BPI companies affected by lay-offs because of plant closings in 2013. BPI was forced to shut down three production facilities — in Texas; Kansas, and Waterloo, Iowa after national news reports called the company’s Lean Finely Textured Beef product “pink slime.”
The president of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, Chris McGowan, says it’s an incredible commitment to the affected communities, “Here it’s been five years and one of the first things that this company and this family have done has said, we want to go back and help those people who were directly impacted five years ago and see what we can do to help.
