The USDA’s quarterly hogs and pigs report confirms the continued expansion of the U.S. industry. The industry contracted after an outbreak of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus starting in 2014 and has rebounded strongly, with record production in 2016 and an even faster pace in 2017. The pace has accelerated even further recently with two new pork plants coming on-line and daily slaughter matching or hitting new all-time highs several times in September.
